Historic “S” Bridge

I had a request to photograph a local historic bridge for an assignment that I am working on. The “S” Bridge, which was part of the National (Cumberland) Road, was started in 1805 and completed in 1818. Countless wagons and stagecoaches passed over it going West during the western migration during our country’s early years.

Later it was replaced on the road with a modern bridge, which sits right next to the original. It is a cool stone bridge with the road passing over it in an “S” shape. Surprised right!! The new bridge is straight and boring. Because the new bridge is sitting within a few feet of the “S” Bridge and the number of electrical power p

olls and lines around it, it is difficult to get a good photo of the structure. I didn’t necessarily like any of my photos, but I thought I would share this one with you for a few reasons:

1. It still has the old style direction sign next to it, which is common in Washington County PA.

2. So you can see Before and After editing pictures. (see 2nd picture below)

Before and After Editing:

I always edit my pictures in Photoshop CS6 before showing them to anyone. Usually I crop, darken them a little, and sharpen the images to make sure they are tact sharp. But I don’t try to go over board with editing. I usually don’t remove objects or “photoshop” anything drastically. But I just couldn’t stand all the telephone polls and power lines in this photo. So I removed them and I thought you might like to see it Before and After.
