Cresson Prison

Enjoy this series of photos from the abandoned Cresson Prison.  These are some of the hundreds of photos I captured on this photo walk.

Cresson Prison Tunnels

During our time at the abandoned Pennsylvania SCI (State Correctional Institution) Cresson prison facility, I spent a little time exploring the underground tunnels by myself.  No electricity, so my flashlight was the only light source.  Just a little creepy.

Here is another photo from my recent exploration of the abandoned prison in central Pennsylvania.  The SCI Cresson campus is interesting for a number of reasons.  This photo isn’t the typical prison photo, if there is such a thing.  But I liked this perspective.

SCI Cresson

Yesterday I got a chance to explore the abandoned SCI (State Correctional Institution) Cresson campus in central Pennsylvania.  The State closed this prison in 2013.  Along with being a prison it was also a mental hospital in the past (before being a prison) and before that it was a TB sanatorium.  The sanatorium opened in 1912 after 500 acres was donated to the cause.  It was originally known as Allegheny Tuberculosis Sanatorium.

Towards the end of the day, I found the solitary confinement area of the prison.  All the cells had a normal prison bed, but not this one.  How bad do you have to be to get assigned to this cell?  I’m guessing very very bad.  I can’t imagine being chained to this bed.

Prison

Here is a photo I took a few years ago during our abandoned prison explore.  In case you’re wondering, we got permission and access to this site.  This specific wing of the prison was one of the newer areas.  The older areas looked like the classic old prison you’d expect.

State Correctional Institution

I haven’t posted a photo from this spot recently.  This is from the abandoned prison outside of Pittsburgh.  Blair and I were given official access to explore and photograph it.  This was one of many long boring (but interesting) hallways inside the facility.

By the way, I met a legend in the Pittsburgh Photography circles tonight. It was nice meeting JP Diroll ( @jpdirollphotography ). You can see his work on this website (http://jpdirollphotography.com) and all his social media channels.

Prison

I think I mentioned last week that I need to get out an take some photos……  Well, nothing has changed since then… I haven’t taken any photos and I still need/want to….

Tonight’s photo is from our past exploration of the abandoned Pennsylvania prison….  I can’t imagine what this looked like or felt like with a couple hundred prisoners inside it.  It felt dark, sad, and repressive with it empty….

Solitary

I hope you’re having a great Tuesday.  Forgive me for not having much to say tonight.  I guess I’m just fried right now with little to say or I can’t think of anything to say…..  So, enjoy this photo I took while Blair and I explored an abandoned prison.  This photo is from the solitary confinement (max security) area.

Zone 6

I hope everyone is having a great Thursday night.

We had a great time exploring this abandoned state prison last weekend.  Even though it’s abandoned, it isn’t in bad shape.  So it doesn’t look like most of the abandoned building photos I share with you.  Regardless, it was fun….honestly how often do you get to explore a prison?  It doesn’t happen often.  I’ve explored Eastern State Penitentiary in Philly, Alcatraz in San Francisco, and Moundsville Penitentiary in West Virginia.  All of those were unique in their own way.

Solitary Confinement

Blair and I had a great morning in prison today.  We got an opportunity to explore and photograph an abandoned Pennsylvania prison.  They’re getting ready to convert the site into a veteran’s center.  I am thankful to Bob for thinking about us and getting us access.  Good times…..
