South Haven Lighthouse

Small series of photos from a past trip to Michigan.  I love this little break wall and lighthouse.  The sunsets from this spot are usually amazing.

Detroit Urbe Reflections

Happy Friday night.  Here is a 2018 throw back from a Detroit urban exploration photo weekend.  I captured this photo upstairs in the Cadillac Stamping plant after it rained hard.  I loved the refection of all the plumbing, metal work and industrial machinery.

Cross Village Beach

I love this photo.  I love the sky, Lake Michigan water, the beach with the fallen trees, and just the mood of the photo.  MJ and I explored this beach following lunch at the Old World Café (by the way, it’s a great restaurant) in Cross Village Michigan.  This was our second visit to Cross Village this year.  On our first visit, we didn’t drive down to the beach.  I’m so glad we did on this 2nd visit.

Chateau Chantel By Air

Here is a photo from a long, long time ago (last October….COVID time is like dog time).  I took this while traveling in Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City Michigan.  There are a ton of vineyards, distilleries and places that make hard cider in this area.  Not to mention, it is just beautiful…rolling hills, numerous peninsulas, Lake Michigan as the backdrop, fall color and much more.  It was great getting back up there, since it’s probably been over 10 years since our last visit.  Much too long.

I took this photo looking down on the Chateau Chantel vineyard/winery.  They have an amazing spot, and it is worth a stop.  Plus, the wine is great as well.

Wine With A View

I captured this photo on our last trip to Michigan (October 2020).  We visited a small handful of vineyards (all outdoor activities only at tables/chair sitting far apart) including this location.  This specific winery had this unique view out the back of the building.  The vineyard is called Hawthorne Vineyards, which sits on Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City.

Point Betsie

Here is another photo I took at Point Betsie Lighthouse in northern Michigan.  You can see the start of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in the background.  If you’ve never been to this area of Michigan, do yourself a favor and go.

Loon Song Covered Bridge

Long before our recent trip to Michigan, I had found a photo of this covered bridge by northern Michigan photographer @snaphappymichigan (Heather Higham).  Per my normal process, I saved the photo and cataloged it as a potential future destination…. I do this all the time when I find a unique photography spots around the world.  I usually find these while scrolling through social media sites or sometimes by conducting a specific Google search.  The result is a database of thousands of sample photos from hundreds of locations world-wide.  That means that when I’m heading to a specific location, I can go to my database and have locations ready queued up to go explore.  Often, I want to capture a photo similar to the sample photo I found from another photographer, but most often it just gives me an idea of the location allowing me to explore it looking for my own angle and perspective at a site I might otherwise never know about.

About a week before we left for this trip, my friend Karalee Kowatz shared the same photo by Heather Higham that I had saved over a year ago.  Karalee has a habit of finding and sharing the best photographs from around the world on FB.  So below you can see Heather’s photo and my version which I took this week.

South Haven Light

I know….another Michigan photo.  This one is from South Haven Michigan.  MJ was amazing and sat out in the cold for over an hour waiting for me to capture sunset and post-sunset photos of this light at the end of the pier.  I got this one with the drone from a perspective not normally seen.
