2021 Family Lego Build

As many people know, our family completes a Lego build together every winter holiday season.  Last year I put together a time lapse video of the build.  Several people ask me if I planned to do a similar thing this year, which I wasn’t going to do.  Based on those conversations, I did a short video demonstrating our progress.  As you’ll see, we built the Lego Grand Piano this year, which works as a player piano.

Pink Piano

Here is the famous Pink Piano in Gary Indiana.  We went to Gary last March so it wasn’t that long ago, but I can’t remember the name of this abandoned building.  Regardless, this is a common spot for Urbex Photographers.  We included some footage from this location in our Amazon Prime “Shutter Rush – City of Abandonment” film (available now if you’re interested).

Elation Piano Bar

Here’s a silly photo for you.  I took this on board the Carnival Elation cruise ship, within their piano bar.  The entire bar is designed with a New York City theme and that includes this giant replica of the Statue of Liberty’s head.  Sort of a weird thing to find in a bar, but it sort of worked!!

Lindy Hop

This is the Lindy Hop.  A piano bar themed after the Spirit of St. Louis airplane.  Charles Lindbergh flew the Spirit of St. Louis in 1927 on the first non-stop flight from New York to Paris.  It only took him 33 hours and 30 minutes to make the flight.  Interesting, Mr. Lindbergh named it the Spirit of St. Louis in honor of his supporters from the St. Louis Raquette Club.

Anyway this piano bar is on the Carnival Valor ship, which sails out of Port Canaveral in Florida.  The bar was pretty cool and I made sure I captured it.  Enjoy your Saturday.

Lonely Piano

It’s a piano.  That’s what MJ suggested I put for this blog post.  She didn’t think I needed to say anything else.  Jay and I found this beauty up on the 3rd floor of an abandoned church in Detroit last summer.  Due to the recent rain, there was standing water in many of the abandoned buildings and this one was no different.  That might not sound like such a great thing, but it gave us lots of opportunity for reflections.

The most common item I find in abandoned buildings are pianos.  I think it’s because people don’t want to move them when they leave the buildings.  Most of the pianos I find are in rough shape.  This one was no different (all the keys and internal items were striped out), except the woodwork on this piano was amazing.  I think someone should go back and pull this piano out to save it.  Maybe make a kids bed out of it or something.  I think someone creative could do something amazing with it.

Shows Over!!!

During our trip to Detroit for Urban Exploration, we found this piano in an abandoned school.  Interesting note: the most common thing I find in old abandoned buildings is pianos of all types.  I am sure because of their size and weight, people just don’t want to move them.  So I wasn’t surprised when we found this beauty.

Quick pet update:  Some of you know, we had to put my 4 year old cat down after a tumor developed in his belly.  Anyway, a few weeks later our 10 year old cat go outside (long story) and never returned.  Losing both of them was hard, but we got two replacement kittens....Lucy and Lenny.  Below is a picture of Lucy, taking advantage of handcrafted pottery from Bermuda.

Piano Bar – Carnival Dream

It is hard to believe that our cruise happened over a month ago.  Wow time can fly by very fast.  Anyway, here is a picture from the Piano Bar on board the Carnival Dream cruise ship.  I have a routine that’s developed over time through our numerous cruises.  What I do is wake up at least one morning at an extremely early time to photograph the cruise ship when 99% of the passengers are asleep.  So I’ll get up at 5am to photograph the inside of the ship while it is empty (or so it appears) and stay up to capture the sunrise over the ocean.  If I get up later, the early birds will start to come out for their coffee.  If I get up to much earlier, the casino and party crowd will still be up getting in my photos.  5am is the magic hour on a cruise boat.

What I find extremely interesting about this photo is all the RED in the photo.  With a location like this, it can be very hard to get a good picture.  I think this turned out pretty good considering the environment.

Abandoned Piano

Dave, Brad, and I were out on the hunt today for old and abandoned places.  We came upon a great location….. not sure I want to say where at this point.  In the basement of this old dormitory, we found the Day Room, which had this Mchlm & Sons piano.  I thought the scene was beautiful, but I am probably the only one.
