Basilica and William Penn

I captured this long exposure drone photo in downtown Philly in 2019.  In the middle is the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.  Down the street to the right is City Hall with the William Penn statue on the top of it.

Phoenix Center

Last fall while I was in Michigan, I spent an afternoon with an old friend photographing some spots around Pontiac.  We hit up this spot, which is an abandoned concert venue.  Although you’d never know this spot hasn’t been used for years.  Someone is paying good money to keep in in great shape even though it isn’t in use.  It looked like they could hold a rock concert the next day…..  So it isn’t your normal grungy looking abandoned location.  But it was cool exploring this spot.

Pittsburgh City Hall

This is also known as City-County Building.  It was built from 1915 to 1917 and was designed by renowned architect Henry Hornbostel.  This is the main hall as you enter the building.  To keep the public out of my photo, I just tilted the camera up to avoid them.  The only problem with that is that you don’t get to see the amazing lower third of the building.  You’ll have to trust me that it is just as cool as the top portion.

Carnegie Mellon University

On a recent photo walk with Brad and Dave, we were looking for something unique.  Something that hasn’t been photographed a million times.  That’s when we decided to photograph CMU.  We got access to Baker Hall and I captured this amazing stairwell.  The security guard told me that it is the best stairwell on the campus and I think he was right.

Carnegie Music Hall

Here is an oldie.  I took this photo back in 2012 of the Carnegie Music Hall in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh.  I processed it but never shared it with the world.  Last night I was digging through my files and found it…but I didn’t like it.  So I took my original 7 exposures from that day and re-processed it last night.  I like it much better.

You can see some previous photos from that day at the links below:

Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre II

I posted another picture of this Reykjavik Iceland building from a different angle in the past.  I loved the look of this amazing structure so much; I went back to the archives to post another picture of it for you.

Here is the previous post of this building: http://brook-ward.com/blog/2014/3/17/harpa-concert-hall-and-conference-centre

Harpa Concert Hall And Conference Centre

This is a beautiful concert hall in the harbor of Reykjavik Iceland.  It held it’s opening concert in May 2011 and is home to both the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and The Icelandic Opera.

I took this picture at about 1am in the morning when the sun was still setting in the harbor.  It was a perfect blue hour, except the blue hour lasted about 6 hours…because the sun doesn’t ever set during the summer in Iceland.  It’s an amazing example of beautiful modern architecture put in perfect place to make the entire project wonderful.  When you see it, you can’t help but be drawn towards it.

City Hall

This is a seven image auto-bracketed HDR image of the doors at City Hall near my home.  I got a request to take a picture of this building, which I completed.  The building itself is fairly plain, but there was something about these doors that drew me in for a closer look.  I hope you like them.

By the way, tomorrow I will be photographing the Steelers vs. Ravens at Heinz Field.  Like normal my goals will be in this order:

Don’t get run over by a player

Have Fun

Get some great photos.

I’ll share some photos from the game on Monday or Tuesday.

Sacramento Homeless

Last fall while traveling in California, I got a chance to stay in Sacramento for a number of days.  I enjoyed the city, the people and the culture.  I was a little surprised at the number of homeless people in the downtown area.  Apparently, a large number of them have been camping out on the City Hall property, using the Occupy Sacramento movement and holding an “extended protest” as a cover/excuse to abuse the situation and just live on the property.  So the City Counsel passed a policy on 9/11/12 stating if you wanted to hold a rally/protest on the property it would require a permit and set the fee at something like $50.  This amount is low enough to allow a real rally/protests, but high enough to prevent the homeless from camping out there forever.

Well the policy wasn’t in effect yet at the time I was there and there were homeless individuals hanging out around the building.  This gentleman was more then happy to pose for this picture with one of his many signs he uses throughout the day.  I had a great conversation with him, learned a lot about him and his situation, and unfortunately got close enough to smell him…..  That part wasn’t great.

Photo Technique:

This was a 3-exposure auto-bracket (+1, 0, -1) set taken in Aperture Mode set at f11.  Merged in Photomatix Pro.

Carnegie Music Hall Lobby

The main Carnegie Museums sit in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh.  Part of the museum includes the Carnegie Music Hall, which is a remarkable Italian Renaissance architectural design commissioned by Andrew Carnegie.  Construction was started in 1891 and it has been used for performance ever since.

Last spring, I called, emailed, and bugged the Events Coordinator until she allowed Brad, Dave, MJ and I access to photograph the inside of this amazing building.  Tonight’s photo is of the main lobby outside of the music all.  They had it setup for a wedding reception later in the day, which is a popular venue for receptions and events.

I captured this photo with a 3 exposure auto-bracketed set of images (+1, 0, -1) and created the HDR image with Photomatix Pro.  If you ever get a chance to visit this location, please do so.  It is worth the time to walk the facility.   The attached museums are also great, but expect to spend more then a full day and you’ll still miss items.   For more information on the Carnegie Museums, click HERE.

Carnegie Music Hall 2nd Floor Lobby

I got a great opportunity last spring to shoot the inside of Carnegie Music Hall in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh.  Following that photo shoot, I posted (prior to starting this blog) a number of pictures that you can see here:

Last night I was looking through some old shots and came across tonight’s post.  I had forgotten about it and realized how much I liked this picture.  I hope you like it as much as I do.

This was a 3-bracket set (+1, 0, -1) taken in the corner of the hallway looking down both directions.  They had some junk in the way down one direction, so I removed it with Photoshop.  Otherwise, this is how this wonderful facility looks.
