Lunatic Asylum

This room was part of the locked down unit (highest security unit…criminally insane) at the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia.  I don’t want to know what happened in this space by the patients and to the patients….

PNC Park From Above

Here is a photo I took in late 2019 of downtown Pittsburgh.  You can see the baseball stadium (PNC Park), Allegheny River, the three sister bridges (one being renovated), the Lawrence Convention Center and most of downtown.

PPG Skyview

Pittsburgh is a very pretty city.  Frankly, it’s underrated and should be a travel destination for those who’ve never been here before.  I took this photo looking down on the PPG building with Heinz Field and the three rivers in the background.

Point Fountain

MJ, Blair and I worked in the yard all day and now I feel like I could go to bed immediately (it’s only 7pm).   But I’ll probably stay up a couple more hours, otherwise I’ll be awake at 4am staring at the ceiling.  Anyway, due to my physical exhaustion, I will keep this short.

Here is a photo I took with my drone looking at downtown Pittsburgh.  On this morning, Blair and I tried to catch a nice sunrise that didn’t happen.  We got this cloudy morning instead.

Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

I hope you have a great weekend.  I don’t have any solid plans other then to relax, do some work around the house and spend time with family.

I took this photo last spring when Bob, Theatherwiz, Blair and I spent a weekend capturing photos of abandoned buildings including the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virigina.

Pittsburgh Under The Moon

I took this photo last summer on a clear night.  You can see the 3rd bridge (Rachel Carson Bridge) is covered for renovation.  I loved how this night cityscape photo turned out and really helps make Pittsburgh look great, which it is.

PPG Place

As you’ve probably noticed, I love my drone.  Not only do I like flying it, but I love the photo perspectives I can get with it.  Today’s post is from a recent flight in downtown Pittsburgh.  This is the top of PPG Place.  If you’ve never seen it, the complex is amazing.

The Point from Above

Yesterday, Blair and I got up early in an attempt to catch the sunrise at The Point State Park.  Unfortunately, we had two events happen that prevented our planned photo.  First, the Fountain was turned on when it was supposed to be turned off.  Second, the sunrise was a bust!! So, we made the best with what we were given.  I captured this photo as part of this excursion.

Come back in a day or so to see the next blog post, which will be a drone video from this spot.

Lunatic Asylum

I couldn’t come up with a clever title for this post for a number of reasons, which we won’t get into tonight.

Anyway, I took this photo recently at the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston West Virginia.  Unfortunately, they have the place all cleaned up.  It wasn’t grungy enough for me.  I wanted it in the state it was in when the Lunatic Asylum closed.  They’ve got it all “safe”, clean and “pretty”.  I think the real beauty would have been in the “dirty, stuff left behind” condition.  If that makes sense…..

I made the best of it and captured some cool photos.  This was on one of the upper floors.  Something about this hallway caught my eye.  Standing there, I could imagine all the patients (prisoners) being locked up in these little rooms.  Some of the “treatments” and “therapies” they used over the decades was rough to put it mildly.  When this facility was operational, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Morgue

I’ve been off social media for a few days.  I just needed a break.  I’m back now.

While I was away, I spent the entire weekend out taking photos, which felt great.  One of the locations I photographed was the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia.  We had full access to all the buildings for the entire morning, some portions of them going back to the Civil War.  One of the buildings on the large campus was a medical facility.  I can only guess what took place within that facility.  In the lowest level, I came across the morgue.  It still has a two-shelf human body cooler for storing bodies and a coffin on the floor.  MJ referred to this photo as creepy.  I didn’t feel that way, but I’m weird.

6th Street

Have a great weekend.  I had all kinds of ideas about what I could and should do….  And I’m not doing any of them.  So, what did I do?  I ran a 5K fun run today to raise money and awareness for TRPIL, but otherwise I’ve got lazy and didn’t do much.

I took this photo few weeks ago at dusk in downtown Pittsburgh.  I think Pittsburgh is a beautiful city with amazing views.  This is one of many such spots.  If you’re not familiar with Pittsburgh, this is the 6th Street Bridge in the foreground and the downtown area of the city behind it.

The Burgh

Most of my photos are extremely colorful.  I usually push the limits of color because that’s the way I like them.  Tonight’s photo is toned down compared to my normal.  I took this photo with my drone a few months ago at sunset.  Downtown Pittsburgh is a beautiful spot.

Downtown Pitt

I took this photo with my drone a few months ago in downtown Pittsburgh at dawn.  The site wasn’t really even awake yet.  This is a perspective not seen often.  I like the leading lines with the road heading towards the Highmark building and the road along the river.

Smithfield Again

I’ve posted numerous photos of this bridge in the past and I can’t get enough of it.  This historic architectural wonder has been used since 1883.  I took this photo a few months ago and I doubt many people have this perspective.  I hope you like it.
